The distinctive profile of Maria Island draws all eyes like a magnet. Once a site of early convict settlement, the island is now a National Park. One of the birds that lives both on Maria and on the beaches of the East Coast is the Hooded Plover Charadrius rubricollis. This distinctive little bird was once common on Southern Australian beaches but increasing disturbance and development is now limiting its range.
